Scans can be delivered by online file transfer or copied to a USB drive. There is no charge if you provide your own drive. If you need me to supply one, contact me for current pricing.

Yes. Film can be shipped to Fidelity for scanning and returned once the order is complete.

I’d contact me before sending anything so I can confirm the order, return-shipping details and anything specific you’d like done with the scans.

For individual-frame scanning, roll film should ideally be cut to the specific frame being scanned.

If you prefer to keep your film strips intact, that’s fine, but a 20% surcharge applies for each unscanned frame that has to be handled as part of the strip.

Yes, but mounted slides need to be removed from their holders before scanning.

Where possible, film removed from reusable plastic mounts will be reinstalled after scanning. Cardboard mounts generally can’t be reused because they’re damaged during removal.

I can scan 35mm, XPan, 120 and other medium-format film, panoramic formats, 4×5, 5×7 and 8×10 originals.

The Flextight handles film through 4×5, while the Howtek 4500 allows me to drum scan film through 8×10.

Yes. I scan colour negative, black-and-white and transparency film.

Colour negatives can be supplied as raw positive scans or individually inverted and colour-balanced. More information about how I handle different film types is available on the Colour Management page.

Yes.

For colour negative film, I can supply the raw positive scan if you prefer to handle the inversion yourself. The original RGB scan of black-and-white film can also be supplied on request.

Proof Scans are supplied as JPEG files.

Flextight Scans and Drum Scans are supplied as 16-bit TIFF files. Finished colour scans include an embedded colour profile and are normally supplied in a wide-gamut RGB colour space.

Other colour spaces, including sRGB, can be supplied on request.

I don’t apply sharpening during Flextight or Drum scanning.

That leaves the master file free of baked-in sharpening and gives you control over how the image is sharpened for its eventual use.

I clean film before scanning and remove dust from the finished scan as part of normal preparation.

Dust spotting is completed to remove most visible dust at a zoom level of 50%. Additional dust spotting can be completed for an extra fee.

With Drum Scans, wet mounting can also make fine scratches and other minor surface imperfections substantially less apparent.

Because the film is mounted directly to the drum rather than placed in a holder, I can capture the complete exposed image and, when desired, the surrounding rebate and edge markings.

The Flextight requires a film holder, so some cropping around the edges is unavoidable.

The Flextight Scan is the simpler and less expensive option and still produces an excellent file.

A Drum Scan takes considerably more preparation, but it’s what I’d choose when getting everything possible from the film is the priority.

For Flextight Scans, I offer Medium Resolution and High Resolution.

Medium Resolution produces at least 12 megapixels depending on film format and is plenty for many uses. High Resolution uses the highest practical Flextight resolution available for that format.

Drum Scan resolution depends on the film format. The Pricing page shows the available resolutions, resulting pixel dimensions, approximate file sizes and prices.

Proof Scans have a five-frame minimum.

Flextight Scans have no minimum order.

Drum Scanning has a $100 minimum order, and different film formats and scan resolutions can be combined toward that minimum.

Yes. Orders of 11 or more Flextight Scans or Drum Scans receive 20% off scan prices.

Flextight and Drum Scans, different film formats and different scan resolutions can all be combined to qualify.

Proof Scans and C41 inversion charges are not discounted.
